ONY CAREY takes time out from rehearsals for the Rampant Carnivores' tour to talk about the new album, though he did first offer the following caution: "It seems a shame to take the guesswork & mystery out of the meaning of lyrics, so if you want to work it out for yourself… look away now!"

You have been warned!

NOTE: In addition to Tony's comments, each song includes a link to its lyrics, and there are also sound clips of some songs. Lyrics are in Rich Text Format which should be compatible with most word processors; The sound files are saved as MP3s, so you will need to have a media player capable of playing MP3s installed on your PC. A free player can be downloaded here. The larger files are a higher quality, but will take longer to load over a slow Internet connection (approximately 2 mins 30 seconds per Mb using a 56K dial-up connection - a broadband connection could take as little as 5 seconds). Hopefully they are worth the wait, but we have also included a smaller, lower quality version of each clip. If you have any problems accessing any of these files, please contact the webmaster.

THE RAMPANT CARNIVORES Stupidly Cool
(Leafy Bottom Records, 2004)

In My Garden
"The black hole referred to is in fact suicide. I am not sure why this means so much to me, as I have no tendencies in that direction whatsoever, but I do understand the pure frustration & hopelessness that drives people to it. I think that everybody has these moments, hence the last two lines..."
lyrics (Rich Text Format)

So Cool
"This song is all about self-delusion, madness & obsessiveness. The reason none of it seems real in the chorus, is because it isn’t! I hope these first two songs say nothing about my psyche."
lyrics (Rich Text Format)

Your Cloak is Grey
"I hate those people who knock on your door, or telephone you, trying to sell things. It is an invasion of privacy & the perpetrators should be damned to hell. This song is about all the rogues, liars & cads in the world who talk the talk (talking south), but are sussed even before they open their mouths, with a final plea to change their ways. These people have truly sad lives!"
lyrics (Rich Text Format)
Listen: Hi-Quality (1.58MB MP3) | Low-Quality (633KB MP3)

Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah
"This is all about the hidden side of people. You have to be pigeonholed, but there is part of you that nobody knows. The first verse refers to a prostitute & the second, to my friends… the cold canvassers."
lyrics (Rich Text Format)

I Won't Do It Again
"Simply about the everyday lust that everybody feels. You take advice & don’t like it & then convince yourself that there is a just reason for your decision. Everybody's the same & you swear you won't do it again… but you do. Talking about this song makes me realise that I really do need yet another Rickenbacker…"
lyrics (Rich Text Format)

Too Hot To Handle
"Medallion man!"
lyrics (Rich Text Format)

Stupid Things
"Obvious really. Why do I keep making the same mistakes over & over again? And yet, sometimes, nobody else notices."
lyrics (Rich Text Format)

Voices
"The scariest song on the album. On the face of it, it is about a cheating chick, but deep down, as the writer, it is the voices that scare me!"
lyrics (Rich Text Format)
listen: Hi-Quality (2.2MB MP3) | Low-Quality (920KB MP3)

Automation
"Talking about this song would only make me angry. It is about manipulation of the most appalling kind, by advertising, magazines, television, corporations etc, etc. Do they not know what they’re doing?"
lyrics (Rich Text Format)

Uncle Ale
"Booze. Shame really ‘cos all the Carnivores are pretty addicted to the stuff. I try not to think about this song too often."
lyrics (Rich Text Format)

Joe Black
"I am amazed by what touches people, but not others. Do we all see red as red I wonder, or do some people see it as green, but were told it was red when they were a child? I also have a fascination with old b&w photos & films. It is easy to forget that the people that we see in these images actually saw in colour. This song is all about keeping in touch with your sensitive side. When you watch a film like 'Meet Joe Black', you have to believe that not everybody in the world is a total b*****d."
lyrics (Rich Text Format)

My Black Hole Revisited
"This is a brooding re-visitation of 'In My Garden'. This is the music that the words forced me to write."
